Corporate Resources and Business Improvement

The Resources and Business Improvement directorate is led by Dianne Tranmer. It is responsible for: People Function, Facilities Management, Digital Experience Unit and Technology Group, Information Governance, Executive Support Team and leadership of all our shared services across the GLA Group.

About the team

The UCD team brings together specialisms including digital engagement, service design, user research, business analysis, content and interaction design and performance analysis. These specialisms work in harmony with a shared mission to make all products and services as inclusive, accessible and user centric as possible.

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced Senior Content Designer to join our skilled and creative Content Design function in the User Centred Design team. You’ll be working to communicate the work of The Mayor of London, predominantly focussing on www.london.gov.uk. Balancing organisational and business needs with user needs. Writing and editing content on our website, developing the ways we use the Product, feeding into Service Design and writing and supporting the creation of guidance for london.gov.uk, and other digital products.

We use data and research to understand the problems Londoners face; inform the way we develop content and validate usability. We’re also creative - thinking about how different formats, types of content and useful online tools can best meet user needs and help communicate our messages.

As a Senior Content Designer, you’ll guide and advise policy teams in how best to present their information online, be it through well written and web-friendly text, visuals or applications. You’ll also work closely with Service Designers, Business Analysts, subject matter experts, Product Owners and Developers to ensure new functionality comes with clear wording and a simple journey.

Importantly, you’ll be a team player – working with our multidisciplinary and agile team who are committed to making sure that content is the best it can be and that staff across the organisation are upskilled and empowered.

You’ll work with policy and programme teams from across the organisation – helping them write and create great content for their programmes, strategies and updates. And you’ll of course work closely with the rest of the User Centred Design team and Content Design function.

What your day will look like

  • Lead on content design programmes of work, ensuring high priority items get their required focus, and that teams across the building get the support they need to self-serve effectively and consistently.
  • Support the team with triaging incoming requests.
  • Work alongside the other Senior Content Designer to support more junior Content Design colleagues.
  • Working alongside Product colleagues to develop standardised templates for external‑facing content.

Skills, knowledge and experience

To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Comprehensive professional experience in writing and editing concise, engaging and plain English copy for digital content and products in keeping with SEO and usability best practise.
  • Experience maintaining the structure, content and processes of high-profile websites.
  • A strong understanding of wireframing, prototyping and visual storytelling and its uses in digital.
  • Experience of influencing senior stakeholders to gain programme or project buy-in.
  • Experience using agile/iterative and user centred processes as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Experience ensuring accessible communications, including compliance of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2 AA).

The GLA Competency Framework Guidelines further detailing each competency and the different level indicators can be found here: GLA Competency Framework

This role is based at London Fire Brigade’s Head Office (Union Street SE1 0LL).
