Overview of role
The LU Pump Direct Labour Organisation (DLO) within the Stations, Building & Civils business unit is responsible for maintaining, overhauling and refurbishing contracted pump assets, the efficiency of this service ensures that disruptions to our passenger services are prevented or minimised. The LU Pump DLO operates a 24 hour, 7 days per week, 365 days a year call service to London Underground.
You will be an integral part of a team assigned to maintaining multiple assets across the LU network. As a multiskilled technician you will assume the responsibility for the progress of work packages assigned to you and for the standard of the work carried out ensuring that all relevant safety and quality standards, rules and procedures are adhered to.
You will also share knowledge with the other members of the team and will call upon your knowledge and experience to solve day to day engineering problems.
Key Accountabilities
- Be a part of 24/7, 365 days a year shift cover on pumping system assets across the LU network
- Carry out planned, preventative & predictive maintenance on pumping system assets across the LU network
- Carry out confined space entries within teams performing planned & corrective maintenance
- Take possession of sections of track and protect workers on the track
- Provide access and work with teams in equipment rooms and sub-station areas
- Undertake planned & corrective maintenance on sewage / effluent pumping systems
- Obtain & maintain relevant safety critical licences
- Carry out fault finding & rectify issues on basic and complex electrical control systems & mechanical equipment
- Update shift management & complete all related documentation for planned / corrective activities or update asset management system.
- Accountable for aspects of safety impacting on customers, staff and contractors
- Provide pump PPM, repair and 24/7 call out for all LU DLO pumping system assets
- Where requested by management, provide support to other asset disciplines within LU
- Provide pump overhaul, repair & maintenance within workshop areas
- Ensure assets are maintained in line with LU standards and manufacturer’s maintenance specifications
- Ensuring all work is performed correctly using set procedures, ensure the necessary documentation is accurately processed or update asset management system.
- Ensuring the departments compliance with the Company's Safety and Quality Standards
- Report on unsafe acts & conditions to Company Safety & Quality Standards
- Ensuring the group’s compliance with the Division’s Safety Management System
- Report on portable & static tooling, lifting equipment, safety equipment, workshop and machinery defects
- Report on job progress
- Conduct complex pump & panel repair, rebuild & refurbishment to manufacturer’s and LU instructions
- Test pumping equipment hydraulically & electrically to required standard and return to store
- Maintain & repair ensuring all emergency pump equipment is safe & available, operational, & tagged & tested within required timescales
- Decontaminate site equipment prior to repair & or reuse
- Ensure all pump vehicles are roadworthy and any defects are reported to Shift management for action
- Act as the Lift Asset Manager and & Pump Asset Manager’s representative at all times
Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Skills
- Be able to follow laid down procedures for the relevant processes being carried out to the highest standard of quality
- Hold a current UK driving licence and will be prepared to drive company non HGV
- Knowledge of how to test for & diagnose Hydraulic, Mechanical, electrical defects
- Ability to operate workshop machinery
- Ability to read, interpret & understand then operate to all relevant standards and procedures
- Ability to operate in a highly critical emergency situations to restore service of failed pumping systems
- Ability to read, interpret & understand electrical drawings and other technical information.
Knowledge
- Understand matters related to safety, environmental and quality, e.g. Work Instructions, Health and Safety at Work Act
- Knowledge of different variants of pumps
- Understanding of the operation of pumping systems
- Knowledge of different motor starting techniques
- Working knowledge of SCADA systems (desirable)
- Working knowledge of communication systems (desirable)
- Working knowledge of remote monitoring equipment (desirable)
Experience
- Apprenticeship within an electrical, mechanical or controls discipline or, NVQ equivalent
- Experience in maintenance / installation of pumping systems
- Maintenance of submersible, centrifugal multi-sump pumping installations & sewage pulsometer or solid diverters installations
- Operating in emergency pumping situations – sewer & water main defects
- Ability to operate in a highly critical emergency situations to restore service of failed pumping systems

We are recruiting for a number of vacancies for this role.
If you are shortlisted and invited to attend an assessment/interview, you must bring along qualifications of your Apprenticeship within an electrical, mechanical or controls discipline, or NVQ equivalent, related to this role.
As part of this role, you will be required to drive company non HGV and deliver equipment to other TfL/LUL sites. A full, clean UK driving licence would be essential for the role.
This is a safety critical role, so you will need to get clearance from our Occupational Health team before you start.
