Overview of role

 

As a Requirements Engineer, you shall provide technical expertise and advice to support the development and delivery of requirements engineering activities. This shall be achieved by establishing and systematically documenting the associated definition of customer/user needs and requirements early in the development cycle, followed by design synthesis, change and configuration control, systems integration, verification and validation to enable the successful and safe refurbishment, renewal, improvement and/or extension, etc., of TfL assets. A systematic approach shall be deployed in considering the complete problem and the required outcome, including cost and schedule, performance, testing, manufacturing, training, operations, and disposal.

 

To be considered for the role, you will ideally have experience in:

  • Applying requirements engineering processes and activities.
  • Applying supporting systems engineering processes and activities.
  • Planning requirements engineering activities.
  • Eliciting requirements from a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Practising a variety of different requirement elicitation techniques.
  • Performing functional analysis.
  • Defining requirements at different levels of business and system interest.
  • Defining requirements that comply with standards and good practice.
  • Establishing and assessing requirements traceability.
  • Planning verification and validation activities.
  • Defining verification and validation criteria.
  • Assessing verification and validation responses.
  • Documenting requirements specifications and related reports.
  • Measuring and reporting on requirements related metrics.
  • Utilising requirements management tools.
  • Interacting with risk, assumption, issue & dependency management processes.
  • Interacting with configuration and change control management processes.
  • Working on major projects and complex systems.
  • Working independently with limited guidance and quickly understand complex issues and tasks.
  • Working to tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Work with projects across TfL to identify their needs, translating and moulding them into formal, verifiable requirements.
  • Eliciting requirements from multiple stakeholders with different viewpoints
  • Maintaining requirements all through the project lifecycle, from concept to acceptance into service
  • Be proactive in managing changes and highlighting their impact.
  • Working with project teams from across TfL, supporting them in developing requirements and maintaining the requirements set in the IBM DOORS database
  • Help to develop TfL’s strategic direction for requirements management, ensuring the business has the tools and processes in place to maximise value from the requirements process.

 

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

 

Skills

  • Ability to elicit ‘system needs’ from diverse stakeholder groups and translate them into formal clear, coherent and verifiable requirements (Essential)
  • Ability to work as part of a project delivery team to refine and manage requirements, acceptance criteria and traceability (Essential)
  • Ability to develop key requirements related products including system requirements specifications and requirements management plans (Desirable)
  • Ability to assess the impact of change through requirement tracing (Desirable)
  • Ability to resolve and negotiate requirements conflicts and establish acceptance criteria for inter-connected requirements (Desirable)
  • Ability to assess the verification and validation of requirements, assembling evidence in support of verification submissions (Desirable).

 

Knowledge

  • A good understanding of elicitation, decomposition and traceability methodologies appropriate to the management of requirement hierarchies (Essential)
  • An awareness of the role of good acceptance criteria in the definition of verifiable requirements (Essential)
  • Good understanding of general systems engineering principles and their relationship to requirements management (Desirable)

 

Experience

  • Experience of eliciting stakeholder requirements and managing requirement sets through the full project lifecycle on a major programme or several smaller projects (Essential)
  • Extensive experience using IBM DOORS to create and manage requirements for projects (Essential)
  • Experience of applying the outcomes of requirements analysis through design, test and commissioning stages (Desirable)
