Overview of project/role

Responsible for identifying complicated and unknown technical causes and repairs for defects that fall outside of existing diagnostic documentation in equipment from 1950 to modern cutting edge. This will require strong analogue and digital electronics, power electronics, transistor theory and practical working knowledge. To liaise with all parts of the Workshop and internal/external engineering functions.

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • To diagnose and repair complex faults in electronic and electrical equipment.
  • To resolve escalated technical issues and perform or support the design/overhaul/repair/implementation of electronic/electrical equipment, processes, investigations, documentation and selection of materials.
  • To have a strong focus on delivery, quality, safety and engineering standards.
  • Understand, comply with and test to engineering drawings, circuit diagrams, technical specifications, work instructions and test procedures for both equipment and components.
  • Ability to work to IPC-A-610 and IPC-A-620 Class 3 and any LU standards.
  • Manage the production of all necessary documentation in order to support delivery. In particular Work Instructions and Bills of Materials in line with customer specifications, drawings and LUL standards.
  • Produce estimates in line with customer specifications and requirements.
  • Consult with internal/external technical experts as necessary.
  • Act as single point of contact for customers on technical issues.
  • Drive efficiency in line with the Electronics Team

 

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

 

Skills

  • Theoretical and practical skills for fault-finding/repairing/reverse engineering electronic/electrical equipment.
  • The ability and co-ordination to work to IPC-A-610 and IPC-A-620 Class 3 and any LU standards.
  • A high level of numerical and analytical ability is required along with well developed organisational, communication and inter-personal skills.

 

Knowledge

  • It is essential they have a HNC (or higher) or equivalent in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline and the practical ability to apply this knowledge to historic electronic designs.
  • A broad based knowledge of general engineering principles.
  • A good working knowledge of the Health & safety at Work Act 1974 and other safety regulations.

 

 

Experience

  • Have a proven track record of fault-finding and reverse engineering electronic/electrical equipment to component level. This will include strong practical experience of transistor theory and experience of working with 1950s-70s era electronics as well as modern designs.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a regulated health and safety critical environment.
  • Experience of working with diagnostic instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, logic analysers and curve tracers.
