About the role
The role holder is responsible to assist, manage and work with the Senior Occupational Health Advisor Manager and OH Physician manager to provide strong professional leadership to Occupational Health Advisors, OH screening nurses and OH technicians. They will monitor, advise and assess the clinical practice of the OH Team to ensure best practice and assist with maintaining Safe Effective Quality Occupational Health Service (SEQOHS) and Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS) external accreditations.
To support and deputise for the Senior OH Advisor Manager and Senior OH Physician manager when required.
Responsible for undertaking own clinical practice providing an evidence-based approach in delivery of their work which takes into account advice from statutory bodies such as Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as well as other relevant industry and OH, TFL standards OH/HR/TFL/Nursing and Midwifery Counsel (NMC)
Key accountabilities
- Work collaboratively with the Senior Occupational Health Manager to help lead, develop, monitor and review relevant occupational health and relevant policies and procedures and achieve continuous service improvement and contribute to the maintenance of SEQOHS and RISQS accreditation by assisting with audit, clinical governance and maintaining a quality OH service.
- Provide and role model professional leadership, direction, support and governance to a team of Occupational Health Advisors, OH screening nurses, and OH Technicians.
- Provide line management and leadership for Occupational Health Advisors, Occupational Health Screening Nurses, and Occupational Health Technicians, delivering day-to-day operational support, performance management, and all associated people management responsibilities.
- Undertake own clinical workload, including medicals, fitness to work, management referrals, health surveillance triage and other occupational health duties to the highest professional standard
- To support and participate in inducting, training and sharing knowledge with other OH staff.
- To maintain and share excellent knowledge of the current evidence for clinical practice including awareness of the latest legislative requirements, occupational health guidelines and keep abreast of changes in practice in line with recognised professional bodies. For example OH/HR/TFL/NMC and HSE service specification standards, objectives, guidelines and statutory changes and updates.
- To attend meetings, groups and forums as required. This could include attending both internal and external forums representing TFL.
Key Interface
- The post holder will work closely with the nurse team including the Senior OHA and Physician manager and Clinical Lead, OHA colleagues, clinical nurses and technicians and also the wider medical team of doctors.
- The post holder will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary OH team and the wider CPO team
- The post holder will work collaboratively with all OH stakeholders (including employee groups, TUs, HR, Legal, Customers, operational managers)
- The post holder will liaise with employee primary healthcare and/or specialists.
Knowledge
- Registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) essential
- PgDip or MSc (desirable)
- SCPHN (specialist Community Public Health Nursing) (Occupational Health ) (essential)
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation (essential)
- Substantial OH knowledge including up to date knowledge of legislation, best practice principals and regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrable knowledge of good working practices and administrative procedures
Skills
- Excellent planning, presentation, time and project management skills with ability to work under pressure.
- Able to perform full OH remit.
- Good attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills including thorough written reports, presentations to senior management.
- Planning and Organising - to ensure service resilience and meet customer expectations.
Experience
- Extensive work experience within occupational health
- Experience of providing supervision for clinical staff and managing people.
- Occupational Health experience in a safety critical working environment
- Highest standards of OH clinical work and report writing.
- Previous experience and competency in health surveillance and fitness for work assessments
- Previous management experience
