As a developing highway engineer, you will already have a solid grounding in developing and implementing engineering solutions safely, within time and cost limitations. Highway Engineering is the knowledge of what our highway assets are made from, and how to ensure they will remain fit for the future. Whilst some Traffic Engineering knowledge is helpful, our bread and butter is aggregates and binder. Love a bit of asphalt and pavement design? We’d love to hear from you!
You will have an understanding of and a passion for highways specification (SHW), highway design standards (DMRB as well as British and European standards), and relevant legislation. You will be supported in working alongside colleagues with other expertise including Traffic Engineering and Traffic Control Engineering to produce holistic, cost-effective, and pragmatic proposals, assist in reactive operational queries, as well as technically assure the work of third parties. You will be committed to your own professional development and strive to become a subject matter expert in your field.
Your skills and experience should demonstrate the following:
- Experience of undertaking pavement investigations and design including footway and carriageway renewals schemes (Desirable)
- An understanding of Health & Safety and CDM regulations (Essential)
- Awareness of the environmental implications of design decisions (Essential)
- An appreciation for, and active interest in the principles of Inclusive Design (Desirable)
- Knowledge and some experience of developing feasibility, concept and detailed design solutions to highways and traffic engineering problems (Desirable)
- Experience of highway geometric design and the departures from standard process (Desirable)
- Knowledge and experience of design of road markings and traffic sign to Traffic Signs Manuals and TSRGD 2016 (Desirable)
- Experience of junction improvement, urban realm /streetscape improvement, safety improvement schemes, cycling design, bus priority scheme (Desirable)
- Construction site experience and buildability awareness (Desirable)
- Awareness of intrusive and non-intrusive surveys related to highway engineering (Desirable)
