About Us
The Transport for London (TfL) Power Engineering Team plays a pivotal role in maintaining, renewing, upgrading, and extending the power systems that support London Underground, DLR, Trams, London Overground, and the Elizabeth Line.
As a DC Traction Power Engineer, you will contribute to shaping the future of TfL’s power networks. Your expertise will make a tangible impact across London by connecting communities, enabling opportunities, and supporting the city’s sustainability goals.
In this position, you will collaborate with teams across TfL to develop and implement complex engineering solutions that are delivered safely, efficiently and within cost constraints.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake engineering design activities for DC traction power systems.
- Provide technical advice as a trusted source of engineering expertise.
- Participate in design reviews and support the construction of projects.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- BEng/MEng in a relevant engineering discipline, or HND with relevant work experience.
- Proven experience assessing and upgrading power systems to accommodate increased load demand using sound engineering principles.
- Experience in preparing both concept and detailed designs for power systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of power assets and their interfaces with other engineering disciplines.
- Working knowledge of legislation, national and international standards relevant to power engineering.
- Proficiency in analysing and evaluating data using software such as Microsoft Excel.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise and structured technical reports.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer or working towards CEng status.
- Experience working on London Underground or Network Rail infrastructure projects.
- Practical experience in the design and installation of DC traction power plant and/or Electrical Track Equipment (ETE).
- Experience of Power system modelling tools (e.g., MTS, Neplan, ERACs, ETap).
- Knowledge of DC traction protection and earthing & bonding arrangements.
- Understanding of Operations and Maintenance requirements for DC traction power systems.
- Awareness of engineering safety management and its application within the railway environment.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g. MicroStation, AutoCAD) for production of engineering drawings.
