Job Title: Engineer – Power HV
Grade: Band 3
Salary: Circa £59,000 (dependent on skills, knowledge and experience)
Contract Type: Permanent / Full Time / Hybrid
Location: Stratford (with various onsite visits required)
Hybrid working, within this role enables a balance of 50% of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Overview of Role
Transport for London (TfL) Engineering are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated Engineer to join the High Voltage (HV) Systems Power team within Power Engineering.
TfL’s Power Engineering team provide technical leadership and professional engineering support across all modes of TfL including London Underground, DLR, London Trams, TfL Rail and Rail for London in relation to the operation, maintenance, renewal and enhancement of the electrical power assets.
The scale of the asset base is vast with London Underground’s electrical distribution system alone being one of the largest privately owned distribution systems in the UK comprising over 270 electrical substations and several hundred kilometres of HV and LV cabling.
The HV Systems team provide engineering support for all HV traction power system assets across the TfL estate. They are responsible for delivering engineering and technology solutions to provide power to the railway, from preparing project specification and design documentation, assisting in tender preparations and evaluations, and oversight of project implementation including design reviews and providing technical assurance.
The team work closely with and provide support to operational colleagues in connection with the day to day operation of the assets and with Asset Strategy colleagues to determine appropriate and cost effective asset renewal / enhancement plans and long-term network development strategies.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
- A highly motivated and adaptable engineer, able to communicate technical matters to technical and non-technical stakeholders both verbally and in written form
- Competent in the specification, design, installation, testing and commissioning of 11kV and 22kV, LVAC and DC Systems.
- Competent in technical document preparation, review and analysis
- BEng/MEng Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
Knowledge
- Detailed knowledge of HV equipment at 11kV and 22kV.
- Knowledge of Traction Power Systems and Equipment
- Knowledge of power system studies including Multi-Train Simulation (MTS), load flow, fault level, harmonic and protection analysis etc.
- Knowledge of relevant TfL, National and International Standards
- Basic understanding of the principles of risk management and value engineering.
- Basic knowledge of applicable health & safety legislation, industry best practice, standards and guidance.
- Basic knowledge of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints.
Experience
- Experience in several of the following areas: conception, specification, design, construction, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operation and or disposal of assets, systems or changes to engineering practice of HV Power and DC traction systems
- Experience of managing small multi-disciplinary engineering teams or applying engineering principles to resolve low complexity technical challenges.
- Experience of applying professional engineering judgement to support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities.
- Experience of building relationships with and influencing a wide range of stakeholder at all levels within and outside of the organisation
