Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in the Vehicles Engineering team and, as well as ensuring legacy assets are maintained safely and reliably, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than trains, trams, buses and ferries - this is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the rest of the 21st century and beyond.

TfL Engineering is designed as a matrix organisation and, as such, Engineers are deployed into specific assignments. Most require your expert technical skills but some could benefit from team management skills if you have them, but this is not a necessity. You will develop and implement engineering solutions safely, and within cost limitations. Day-to-day, you will provide technical guidance and advice in your position as a trusted source of electrical engineering expertise for your team, peers, internal stakeholders and the wider business, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery. Whilst we have listed numerous locations above, we work hard to align the needs of the business with the needs of the individual, so please don’t be put off from the uncertainty of location.

Whilst it is essential that you have proven electrical engineering-related technical expertise in rail vehicle engineering, we are looking for an Engineer that has experience in one or more of the following areas so that the successful candidate can be deployed into relevant assignments:

  • DC or AC power and control system design for Rolling Stock;
  • On-train and train-track wired and wireless communication systems;
  • Electronics or software design for Rolling Stock;
  • Electrical installation best practice, testing and fault finding;
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility for equipment on Rolling Stock;
  • Technical support for commercial specifications.

Your technical skills will be complemented by a solid commercial awareness of developments in rolling stock products, processes and assurance best practice. You will have experience of implementing a risk-based engineering approach through some or all of the asset or subsystem lifecycle, from initial specification, to design, installation, and testing, round to decommissioning, disposal or re-purposing.

You will use your subject matter expertise to provide guidance to  internal customers. We have a keen interest in those that have an enthusiasm and depth of knowledge that can be used to mentor and coach the less experienced engineers in the team.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • A degree in Electrical &/or Electronic Engineering or related discipline, or an electrically biased apprenticeship at a commensurate level plus relevant rolling stock Engineering experience.
  • The ability to work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status if not already held.
  • Knowledge of relevant company, British and International standards, including industry body guidance and standards;
  • Experience of assessing safety risks and application of mitigations;
  • Experience of developing and mentoring other staff members;
  • Experience of providing professional engineering support to enhancement projects or maintenance organisations/processes;
  • Experience of reviewing and assessing the work of others in the delivery of initial designs or modifications (i.e. at a system or train/tram level);
  • Ability to represent the Company’s interests with external parties e.g. railways, standards bodies, regulators.

If you’re unsure if you have the required experience, please do submit your application following the process below and you’ll find out whether you do or not – feedback from the shortlisting can be requested.

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of assets and projects, as you build your career and expertise. We have a flexible approach to work with a balance of office, site and home working that can take account of external demands on your time but this is very much dependant on the area of work that you are assigned into. So come and bring on tomorrow, as a Vehicles Senior Engineer at TfL.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We want to represent the city we serve, which will help us become a more innovative and efficient organisation. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. We are a disability confident employer who guarantee an interview to any disabled candidate who meets all of the essential criteria. We also use anonymising software that removes identifying information from CVs and cover letters to make the process fair. We welcome everyone to apply who feels that they are suitable for the role. Due to the under-representation of women in the Vehicles Engineering team, we would particularly like to encourage female applicants to apply.

Application Process

Please apply using your most recent CV and Covering Letter. Use your covering letter to tell us both how your existing skills, knowledge and experience match the criteria above and why you want to work at TfL. Shortlisting is carried out on the basis of how well you meet the overarching criteria for the role. Do not hesitate to contact the recruitment team if you have any questions or are unsure of any element.

If you are selected for interview, these are usually undertaken via the Teams remote meeting platform. If for any reason you would prefer a face-to-face interview, that can be organised, but there is a chance that one of the panellists may still be remote.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 8th June 2025 @ 23.59
