About Us
Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in one of our Transport System Engineering teams where, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than Tubes, roads, buildings and bridges; this is about connecting communities and creating opportunities – to move London forward safely, inclusively and sustainably.
TfL currently uses a wide range of mechanical, electronic and electrical systems to provide efficient, high-capacity control of rail signalling equipment. Some of these systems and assets are becoming fatigued and life expired, requiring innovative and novel ideas to allow their continued, reliable use.
Day-to-day, you will work within the Equipment Engineering Services – Mechanical Engineering section of the team. You will develop safe, cost-effective engineering solutions across the organisation, as well as providing technical support to operations and projects that require specialist mechanical expertise. As a mechanical engineer within the team, your main focus will be supporting signalling equipment and systems used on London Underground.
The nature of the role involves technical analysis, reverse engineering, failure investigation, research and development, and design and approval of new equipment and systems. Some hands-on work is conducted in Acton at the Railway Engineering Works, or at the Hearne House lab/test facilities; however, there is also opportunity to work on site, including occasional night shifts. In Engineering Services, we are passionate about a good work life balance, and support flexible working. This also means that where work can be done at home, this is feasible.
Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Degree level education in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent IMechE accredited degree such as Automotive Engineering or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering. A HNC qualification in a mechanical biased discipline will also be considered.
 - Experience of managing the technical aspects of projects in a mechanical design environment.
 - Awareness of Electrical Engineering
 - Experience in Computer Aided Design and knowledge of drawing Standard BS 8888
 - Proven record of investigating failures and developing cost effective solutions
 - Good interpersonal skills with ability to build effective working relationships with people at all levels across the organisation and externally
 - Ability to analyse complex data, draw conclusions, produce reports and make recommendations to senior management
 - Knowledge of Engineering Safety Risk Management Principles

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise. So come and bring on tomorrow, as an Engineering Services Engineer at TfL.
