Overview of project/role

 

The Civils Structural Inspector will be responsible to the Civils Inspection Manager, for delivery of field inspections of various assets within the TfL infrastructure. He/she will develop an understanding of the routine maintenance of civil structures and contribute towards appraisal of suggested remedial works where required. Work within the safety and environmental guidelines to ensure that QUENSH is complied with and that LUL meets its legal and contractual responsibilities on behalf of TfL

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • The Inspectors work will follow the safety and environmental guidelines to ensure compliance with QUENSH and that TfL meets its legal and contractual responsibilities.
  • The works include (but are not limited to); desk studies, site works planning, inspections and final preparation of technical reports.
  • All activities shall be undertaken in accordance with relevant statutory Codes, Regulations, Standards, Guidance and Procedures as set out by London Underground and other parts of TfL where necessary.
  • Plan and manage their work time and inspection allocations in an timely and efficient manner
  • Progress understanding of civil assets in respect of deterioration rates and materials behaviours, such as commonly seen defects in Metalwork, Concrete, Masonry and Timber as well as a broad understanding of the impacts of these behaviours on the Civils structure performing its required duty.
  • Provide support and assistance to trainee/Junior inspectors, share knowledge and experience with them.
  • Cooperate with other team members and/or departments where appropriate to achieve overall departmental programme requirements and/or organisational efficiencies.
  • Carry out other various tasks from time to time as required by line management to achieve departmental and TFL requirements
  • Where required, identify general safety issues and/or concerns and report to Shift and/or other Maintenance Departments and/or appropriate LUL staff using the appropriate reporting procedure
  • Ensure that work planned and delivered by external resources meets required safety and quality standards
  • Will be required take own protection within shift hours to allow programme to be delivered efficiently and emergencies to be attended to as quickly as possible.

 

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

 

Knowledge:

  • HNC/HND/BEng/BSc in Civil Engineering (Or equivalent or Working towards).
  • Knowledge & experience of working in civil/structural inspection environments
  • Experience in inspections or assessments of structural assets in accordance with relevant standards
  • Ability to assess structural defects and produce accurate technical reports
  • Attain a Certificate of Competence (CMS) to allow inspection of civil assets or be working towards such a qualification
  • Appropriate health and safety training certificates (IOSH)
  • Hold a safety Critical License/Licences relevant to Civil assets, together with the appropriate Competence Certificate or be working towards such a qualification
  • LU and other training required, including but not limited to:
  • Confined space, LU-IWA, PWT-EH, PWT-TH, sub-station awareness, L&E Operator
  • Other necessary training as deemed by business demands/requirements.

 

Skills:

  • Have a valid UK driving License
  • Able to work well within a Team Environment
  • Possess good IT skills including all Microsoft Suite
  • Good report writing skills
  • The ability to plan and support delivery of a number of inspections simultaneously.
  • Problem Solving and strategic thinking, ability to work to tight deadlines in a high pressure environment, managing conflicting priorities.
  • Good interpersonal, numerical and written skills with an understanding of information technology.
  • Excellent organisational and planning.
  • Facilitation and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance and swift understanding of complex issues and tasks.

 

Experience:

  • Relevant and adequate experience in the inspection of underground structures or equivalent Civils type structures
  • Knowledge and experience of the rail industry or similar safety critical industry and associated rules and regulations essential.
