Day-to-day, your focus will be on delivering designs, drawings, information, calculations and enhancements that keep vital, innovative and big-budget projects moving. You’ll make sure assets are safe, working and compliant; develop your own solutions; and be a trusted source of engineering advice for everyone, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.

 

As an Engineer within the Multidisciplinary Civil Engineering team, you will provide Civil engineering input to support programmes in line with the Mayor’s Transport Strategy aiding your successful deployment to assignments across the organisation which often include asset, project and management related engineering. You will examine the engineering problems and develop viable solutions to suit the business objectives.

 

You will initially be assigned to the London Trams Civil Engineering Renewals Programme, based in Croydon, or on site along the London Trams network as required. Examples of ongoing and upcoming projects include drainage renewals, vehicle incursion mitigations, tunnel water ingress mitigations, embankment assessment and stabilisation, and retaining wall renewal. You will work closely with key stakeholders and other disciplines to coordinate and solve engineering problems.

 

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

 

Your key accountabilities will include:

  • Ensuring the safety, functionality or compliance of low to medium risk newly implemented or altered assets, engineering processes, procedures or systems
  • Leading the development and implementation of low complexity engineering solutions within the Multidisciplinary Civils discipline or functional specialism, through the application of defined engineering standards and governance
  • Providing internal stakeholders with appropriate challenge and professional advice to ensure the development or delivery of high quality, tested engineering solutions.
  • Undertaking risk-based review, monitoring and surveillance of works as required, resolving and or escalating risks and issues as appropriate
  • Maintaining working knowledge of applicable standards, design codes and legislation applicable to Multidisciplinary Civils discipline or functional specialism
  • Evaluating, selecting and applying appropriate solutions to low risk/value/complexity engineering problems that improve efficiency or effectiveness, while improving safety and reducing operating costs.
  • Makes technical recommendations for Multidisciplinary Civils discipline or functional specialism to customers or senior management to inform technical decision making
  • Supporting continuous improvement through the use of best practice, innovation, whole life cost optimisation and effective root cause analysis
  • Consideration of Sustainability and carbon usage as part of solution creation
  • Integration of more than one Civil Engineering functional specialism.

 

Role requirements:

You will preferably be a Chartered member or working towards chartership of the ICE or other recognised institution. You should be at Incorporated level or equivalent minimum, utilising your understanding of the relevant company Standards and other National Technical Standards and guidance to develop designs for a variety of Civil engineering projects.

 

You will have Knowledge, Skills and Experience at a basic level of:

  • Legislation, Technical standards and Industry best practice related to Civil Engineering
  • Health, Safety and Environmental considerations applicable to Civil Engineering (including CDM)
  • Experience in some of the following areas/stages: conception, specification, design, construction, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operation and or disposal of assets
  • Understanding of the interfaces with and integration between own discipline / functional specialisms and the wider transport system
  • Understanding of Risk management and Value engineering
  • Understanding of the challenges of introducing new assets or changes in practice into the transport system and necessary trade-off between cost, time and quality
  • Ability to undertake design, construction, maintenance and/or assurance of some Civil Engineering systems and assets under supervision and/or to assess the condition of some Civil Engineering assets under supervision
  • Ability to maintain and undertake asset management of some Civil Engineering assets including whole life consideration of the assets
  • Ability to manage small engineering teams and/or apply engineering principles to resolve low complexity technical challenges
  • Ability to apply professional engineering judgement to support low risk /complexity projects or operational activities
  • Ability to build relationships with and influence a wide range of stakeholders at all levels within and outside of the organisation

 

As engineers can be deployed in Project Engineering and Engineering management roles and there is opportunity for growth into leadership role it can be important that candidates have some leadership aptitude and is also beneficial to demonstrate Skills Knowledge and Experience in relation to these roles: 

 

  • The Project Engineer will be the programme / project technical lead and provide both day to day management and technical leadership to the multi-disciplinary engineering team. He/she will support the Programme / Project Manager for all engineering matters ensuring that an integrated solution, that meets the requirements, is delivered and that stakeholders are appropriately assured of the direction and quality of engineering outputs.
  • The Engineering Manager will be the principal point of contact for the Delivery Business engineering function, managing the relationship with key stakeholders. They will be accountable for understanding delivery business requirements, developing engineering scopes of work and solutions to meet requirements, and managing the successful delivery of functions and services to agreed levels. 

 

This position requires you to be able to work in a matrix framework. You need to demonstrate and build on your credibility, competence and technical excellence in the development, approval and implementation of robust solutions through collaborative working, trust and proactive management of your customers’ expectations.

 

As an Engineer you will be part of the team responsible for developing Civil engineering schemes to agreed time, quality and cost parameters, through partnership working with TfL directorates and relevant external stakeholders.
