Job title: SHE Environment Manager 

Salary: £58,000 depending on exprience                                       

Band 3

Contract type: x1 Permanent and x1 6-month Fixed-term contract                       

Location: Southwark (Palestra) & Stratford (Endeavour Square), include hybrid working where possible

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.  

 

Overview of project/role 

 

This role exists to develop corporate environmental strategy, offer technical advice, and support compliance and hold the business to account through compliance and assurance activities. It is the organisational repository of technical knowledge and works across the business to coach and upskill on environmental capability. It works to support TfL culture  change by setting environmental and sustainability vision and policy, coordinating associated improvement activity, then tracking and monitoring progress. This role is also a contributor for promoting diversity and inclusion across the function.

 

 

Key Accountabilities  

 

  • Champion and inform the corporate environmental strategy through innovation and research, and support the integration of environment and social impact into policy development across the whole business.
  • Support and challenge the business to change culture and behaviour, and deliver on activities to improve our corporate environmental performance in line with the strategy.
  • Coordinate and track activities and progress against plans to ensure continued progress.
  • Through stakeholder engagement and partnerships, raise awareness, provide advice, input and coaching to other SHE teams the wider business and throughout the supply chain on environmental and social impact issues.
  • Support the ongoing development of the SHE Management System and its use across the business as well as supporting the business with training and upskilling on environmental and sustainability matters.
  • Provide environmental input to relevant processes across the business, such as procurement by writing KPIs and contract clauses, assessing tenders, monitoring and managing contractors’ performance and maintaining a suite of environmental clauses to ensure consistency across TfL environmental contractual requirements.
  • Understand environmental performance data and upskill the business partner teams and the business to be able to interpret and act upon it.
  • Support the business in meeting external environmental and sustainability reporting requirements, as well as drafting consultation responses and internal briefings and papers.
  • Through stakeholder engagement, support the business in developing processes and creating and maintaining environment and sustainability products and tools, e.g. the Whole Life Carbon tool, to support TfL green agenda.
  • Be a champion and advocate for safety, health & environment in everything they do, role modelling what it means to make safety, health, and environment personal.
  • This role may involve some line management of individuals such as Assistant Environment Managers, graduates, apprentices, and colleagues on placement in the team.

 

Skills, Knowledge & Experience  

 

Knowledge

 

  • Strong knowledge of environmental management regulations and the issues TfL faces (Essential)
  • Strong knowledge of designing and evaluating initiatives to improve corporate environmental performance (Essential)
  • Proven knowledge of how to form strategy and progress it into action in a complex organisation (Essential)
  • Expert understanding of the political framework in which TfL operates (Essential)
  • Strong knowledge of TfL’s / other SHE Management systems (Essential)
  • Strong knowledge of UN Sustainable Development Goals (Desirable)
  • Strong knowledge of impact evaluation methodologies (Essential)
  • Membership of relevant professional body, e.g., IOSH, IEMA, CIBSE (Desirable)
  • Related degree or equivalent qualification (Desirable)

 

Skills

 

  • The ability to develop credibility and influence stakeholders (Essential)
  • Good skills in setting policy frameworks (Essential)
  • Strong ability to initiate and effect business and behaviour change design (Essential)
  • Strong ability to work in a highly pressurised environment to very tight time constraints and high quality (Essential)
  • Good systems and strategic thinking including an holistic technical understanding of multiple topics/disciplines such as commercial, project space, strategy and sponsorship, engineering (Essential)
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, with a proven ability to write strategic and analytical reports (Essential)

 

Experience

 

  • Experience of setting visions and ambitions in large complex organisations (Desirable)
  • Experience in achieving changes in environmental behaviour and performance (Essential)
  • Experience in influencing senior level discussions around the shape of the business.(Essential)
