About us

 
The Surface Control Centre (SCC) (previously known as the Network Management Control Centre) is a world class operation delivering Londoner’s journeys safely across Transport for London’s Surface network including London’s iconic Buses, Roads and Tunnels.  
 
We deliver highly effective and efficient command and leadership of the Surface (non-rail) network by safely supporting, co-ordinating, and enabling operational delivery at a network level to ensure TfL provides a world-class integrated service to its customers and to London more widely. SCC monitors and operates London’s Road network including 6,000 traffic signals to support the movement of people and freight, as well as operating 13 tunnels including the Blackwall Tunnels, Rotherhithe Tunnel, and newly opened Silvertown River Crossing. SCC also manages London’s bus network, including 8,000 buses that supported 1.8 billion journeys in 23/24. More widely, SCC provides Command, Control, Coordination & Communication (C4) functions for Surface Transport.

Role

 

In this exciting and dynamic role, known internally as a C4 Coordinator, you will be responsible for: 

 

  • Composing, disseminating and quality assuring planned communications, drawing from a wide range of sources to accurately inform our Senior Leadership Team, partners and operational businesses to promote a common operating picture across the business. 
  • You will provide vital support to business-critical operations for planned and ad-hoc incidents, including operational calls and meetings by tracking actions and being responsible for timely accurate and relevant outputs. 
  • You will be responsible for ensuring data quality and completeness, seeking additional explanatory information when necessary, and the appropriate and timely sharing of information to various colleagues and stakeholders to inform decision-making and safeguard TfL's reputation. 
  • You will be responsible for undertaking ad-hoc reporting, analyses, liaison and general business operations functions as directed. 
  • You will use of a range of operational tools and systems to mitigate impact on the bus and road networks to keep London moving, as well as communicating this information directly to the general public via systems such as Countdown and the TfL website.

Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Ways of Working 

 

  • Strong communication skills - written and verbal (essential)
  • Demonstratable experience in media and communications, particularly in the traffic and transport sector (desirable)
  • Ability to tailor messages to specific audiences to protect and enhance business reputation (essential)
  • Ability to work as part of a high performing team to achieve a shared goal (essential)
  • Computer-literate and able to use multiple systems in a dynamic environment (essential)
  • Ability to work under pressure to provide support to incident management during major incidents and events in London (essential)
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to ensure high quality and consistency of outputs (essential)
  • Strong knowledge of communication tools and platforms and good practical experience within a time sensitive dynamic environment (essential)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and share your knowledge with others so everyone can make better decisions (essential)

 

Shifts 

 

Working as part of a 24/7 operation in our advanced control centre in Southwark, you will be working a shift roster made up of early shifts (mainly 06:30 – 14:30), late shifts (14:00 – 22:00) and night shifts (21:30 – 07:00 or 21:30 – 08:30) on a rotational basis. There are some variations in the shift lengths on the roster particularly on weekends (e.g. 08:00 – 20:00).
