Transport for London (TfL) manage more than 1800 highway structures on their strategic highway network including bridges, retaining walls, road tunnels, bus station infrastructure and 9 marine piers across London. The Surface and Highway Structures (S&HS) Team is based in the TfL Engineering Directorate and provides trusted support and advice to highway and marine related teams in the organisation about structures assets. This support is a critical part of ensuring that TfL builds and maintains safe, functional and compliant structures assets and that existing structures are not adversely impacted by other internal or external works.

TfL is currently looking for a Band 2 (B2) Engineer to join this established team. Your focus will be to provide technical assurance for structures schemes and support colleagues across TfL in a wide variety of challenges and projects. You will provide technical advice in the field of highway or marine structures in support of TfL Surface operations, strategy, projects and asset management. This role ensures the safeguarding of Surface structure assets on safety issues, ensuring integrity and efficiency at all stages in the asset life cycle through engagement in planning, design, construction, operation, inspection, maintenance and assessment activities.

You will be educated to a minimum of Higher National Diploma in a relevant subject, ideally be a Technician or Graduate Member working towards Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or other relevant internationally recognised institution.  You will ideally have awareness of national technical standards, legislation, health, safety and environmental considerations, sustainability, design, construction, operation, inspection, maintenance, assessment, and industry best practices related to highway and/or marine structures.  You will ideally have experience in some of the following: highway or marine structures design, assessment, construction, operation and maintenance.  Experience in a related subject will also be considered, including rail structures, where skills are transferable.

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise.
