About the Role

We're looking for a Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS/FRICS) to lead the delivery of inspection and surveying activities across London Underground's built environment portfolio.

This is an opportunity to combine technical excellence with innovation, using data, technology and modern surveying approaches to improve asset intelligence, drive productivity and unlock repeatable efficiencies. You will play a key role in ensuring our assets remain safe, compliant and resilient while helping the organisation achieve more with less through smarter ways of working.

Working across a diverse portfolio of stations and operational buildings, you'll convert asset condition data into actionable insight, influencing maintenance, investment and asset strategy decisions.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead the planning and delivery of inspection and surveying programmes across the portfolio.
  • Drive the adoption of innovative technologies, digital solutions and modern surveying techniques to improve efficiency, quality and decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities for standardisation, synergies and repeatable process improvements that deliver sustainable cost and performance benefits.
  • Provide expert technical leadership on building condition, defects and asset risks.
  • Assure the quality of surveys, inspections and asset data, ensuring robust evidence-based decisions.
  • Use asset intelligence to optimise maintenance, prioritise investment and improve whole-life asset performance.
  • Champion continuous improvement, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and accountability.
  • Build strong relationships across engineering, operational and asset management teams to deliver shared outcomes.

What We're Looking For

Essential

  • Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS or FRICS).
  • Degree-qualified in Building Surveying or a related discipline.
  • Significant experience managing building inspections, condition surveys and technical assessments within complex asset portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of building pathology, construction technology and asset management principles.
  • Demonstrable experience using data, technology and innovation to improve performance, productivity and value.
  • Proven ability to identify efficiencies, reduce waste and deliver measurable business benefits.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, analytical and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience within transport, infrastructure or highly regulated environments.
  • Experience implementing digital surveying, asset management or inspection technologies.
  • Experience leading technical teams and developing professional capability.
  • Our Commitment to Inclusion

Our commitment to people and inclusion

We're committed to creating a workplace where everyone can thrive. We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives and actively support inclusion, wellbeing and professional development.

Application Process

Please ensure your CV clearly demonstrates how you meet the essential requirements, particularly your Chartered RICS status, technical surveying expertise and examples of delivering innovation, efficiencies and tangible business improvements.

Equality and Diversity

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and aim to reflect the diverse communities we serve. We believe that a diverse workforce enables us to deliver better services and outcomes. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. As a Disability Confident Leader, we actively encourage applications from disabled people. As part of the Disability Confident scheme, we aim to offer an assessment or interview to candidates who apply via the scheme where the minimum essential criteria for skills, knowledge and experience has been met. In some circumstances, it may not be practical to offer an interview or assessment to every candidate who applies through the scheme and meet the minimum essential criteria; in these situations, we select candidates who best meet the minimum criteria for the job rather than interviewing all who meet them.

Across all recruitment activity, we recognise that selection methods may vary depending on the nature and scale of the campaign and will be applied fairly, consistently and proportionately in line with our Disability Confident commitments.

We also use anonymising software that removes identifying information from CVs and cover letters to make the process fair.

External All offers of employment are subject to satisfactory right‑to‑work checks.  Candidates must be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK.  At the present time TfL is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this role.

Benefits:

  • In return for your commitment and expertise, you will enjoy excellent benefits and scope to grow.  Rewards vary according to the level of role but mostly include the below
  • Final salary pension scheme
  • Free travel for you on the TfL network
  • Reimbursement of 75% of the cost of a standard class Ticket for National Rail travel from home or 75% reimbursement on a 28-day flexi ticket

  • TfL is committed to work-life balance, operating a hybrid working approach where business and role requirements allow
  • Private healthcare discounted scheme (optional)
  • Tax-efficient cycle-to-work programme
