Quantity Surveyors are the financial linchpin of construction and infrastructure projects.  You will offer advice on lifecycle costing, cost planning, procurement & tendering, contract administration and overall commercial management.

Quantity Surveyors are at the heart of London's growth, transforming our infrastructure. We need the next generation of Quantity Surveyors to develop solutions for London’s challenges, from mass urbanisation to diminishing resources. You'll work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure value for money is being achieved.

As a Quantity Surveyor, you’ll work within a project team to upgrade our infrastructure (which dates to 1863), whilst ensuring we deliver an efficient service. As we look to modernise our assets, you'll be involved in projects, such as to, extend our network, improve our station capacity, purchase new trains and buses to enhance customer experience, improve the reliability of the network via technology updates, reduce times between services and developing new entrances in stations to reduce congestion and support London’s population.

What will I be doing?

As an apprentice, your development programme will be made up of at least seven placements. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for a successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique.

You will be studying for your degree while undertaking placements.  To support you in completing this you will have a day’s release time each week.

Here’s an example of what your first 2 years could look like:

Year 1

Placement 1 – Highways - 6 months – The Highways Infrastructure programme covers both large, complex projects and smaller projects, including carriageway resurfacing, footways, drainage, structures, streetlighting, drainage and vehicle restraint systems. You will also work closely and collaboratively with Procurement, Estimating, Sponsorship, Engineering, Finance and Delivery in this role.

Placement 2 - Station Enhancements - 6 months - To provide upgrades and improvements to stations. You will be dealing with contract administration, cost forecasting and cost reporting.

Year 2

Placement 1 - Piccadilly Line Upgrade (PLU) – 6 months – PLU is a large, strategic programme that will see new state of the art trains, signalling systems and infrastructure upgrades for the Piccadilly Line post contract admin - assessment of payment applications, compensation events, early warnings and responding to contract communications.

Placement 2 – Docklands Light Railway Rolling Stock Replacement Programme (DLR) - 6 months - Management of post contract eg NEC Option C contracts circa £5m project, a post contract circa £2m.

After your first two years on the scheme, the six-month placements will move to year-long placements to help allow you to fully embed in your team and develop deeper knowledge and expertise.
