Overview of the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate, action‑oriented sustainability professional to make a meaningful impact within one of the world’s most recognisable transport organisations.
As a Sustainability Manager, you’ll play a key role in strengthening TfL’s environmental capability by supporting the delivery of our sustainability strategy and embedding best practice across the organisation. You will help TfL become the strong green heartbeat of London, developing programmes, building capability, and supporting colleagues to deliver high‑quality, consistent environmental outcomes.
This permanent role offers the chance to influence cultural change, deliver learning programmes, lead on governance and reporting, and work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Key Accountabilities
- Champion a positive sustainability culture and mindset across the business, supporting colleagues to deliver TfL’s Sustainability Strategy and corporate environment plan.
- Collaborate with teams across TfL to identify opportunities, develop plans and drive delivery.
- Lead the programme management and continued development of the Green Knowledge Programme.
- Administer all aspects of the Green Knowledge Programme, including registration, scheduling, maintaining course content, monitoring delivery performance and working with L&D colleagues.
- Manage and develop a network of approximately 100 trainers across the organisation.
- Deliver Green Knowledge Programme training sessions as a fully trained TfL facilitator.
- Provide regular reporting, updates and governance information to senior leaders.
- Evaluate programme performance and recommend improvements.
- Engage internally and externally to share insights, highlight emerging industry practices and support continuous improvement.
- Identify opportunities for business improvements that strengthen TfL’s environmental knowledge and capability.
- Role‑model TfL’s commitments to diversity, inclusion, safety, health and sustainability.
Knowledge & Experience
- Understanding of London’s governance and legislative landscape.
- Basic understanding of climate change and nature loss, with a strong desire to continue learning.
Skills
- Strong people‑management and team‑development skills.
- Ability to deliver multiple workstreams and meet tight deadlines in a complex environment.
- Excellent organisational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Confident presenter with excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Ability to influence, negotiate and engage effectively with senior stakeholders.
- Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
- Strong coordination, planning and programme management capability.
Experience
- Proven track record of managing and developing people.
- Experience influencing senior stakeholders and providing constructive challenge.
- Experience resolving and escalating risks, issues and dependencies.
- Experience teaching, coaching or facilitating training or workshops.
- Experience running inclusive and collaborative sessions.
- Experience managing detailed records, documentation and reporting to a high standard.
Desirable
- Project management qualification or significant equivalent experience.
- Understanding of delivering challenge programmes in large, complex, transparent organisations.
- Experience with project planning, risk/issue management, resourcing and reporting.
- Experience delivering complex projects in a highly scrutinised environment.
