Overview of project/role
TfL’s Knowledge of London team plays a vital role in maintaining the high standards that make London’s taxi service trusted and respected worldwide. We oversee the Knowledge of London examination process that ensures licensed drivers have an exceptional understanding of the city’s streets and landmarks. Our work supports candidates through this journey and helps uphold a tradition that has been part of London’s transport network for over 160 years.
We’re looking for two part-time Knowledge of London Examiners (21 hours per week) to help us maintain the exceptional standards that London’s taxi service is known for. You’ll deliver fair, transparent and efficient topographical assessments (known as appearancesensuring every licensed driver meets the level of knowledge required. You’ll also provide guidance and support to new applicants and existing drivers, both face-to-face and in writing, and play a key part in investigating complaints to uphold the integrity of the service.
Key Accountabilities
- Deliver the All London and Suburban taxi driver Knowledge one-to-one examinations to ensure all applicants meet the required standard before being licensed
- Conduct examinations in a fair, open and consistent manner, recording all appearances and providing relevant feedback to candidates
- Provide guidance and support to new applicants and licensed drivers through face-to-face meetings, email and written correspondence as directed by the Knowledge of London Manager
- Assist with scheduling assessments and examinations to meet key performance indicators as directed by the Knowledge of London Manager
- Support the investigation of complaints when required by the Knowledge of London Manager
- Work with the Knowledge of London Manager to identify and deliver continuous improvements to the examination process, focusing on efficiency and end-to-end improvements
- Maintain and update personal and team topographical knowledge of London, through route reviews and share information with the team as agreed and directed
- Carry out any other duties as directed by the Knowledge of London Manager

Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels both orally and in writing (Essential)
- Confidence to deal patiently and effectively with potential applicants and members of the public (Essential)
- Effective interviewing skills with a high degree of diplomacy and tact (Essential)
- Customer Service skills (Essential)
- An ability to plan, organise and prioritise work (Essential)
- An ability to work unsupervised and using own initiative (Essential)
- Proficiency in the use of IT, particularly Microsoft Office applications (Essential)
- Hold a valid driving licence and be required to drive a vehicle and /or use your private vehicle on duty (Essential)
- Proven assessment skills and an ability to make sound recommendations (Highly desirable)
Knowledge
- Must have passed the All London examination, have a good knowledge of the taxi trade and private hire industry and an understanding of TfL’s key objectives and strategy (Essential)
- A good level of knowledge and understanding in the provision of training and the delivery of examinations (Highly desirable)
Experience
- Must have at least two years experience working as a licensed All London taxi driver with an unblemished driver record (Essential)
- Experience in dealing with members of the public on a regular basis (Essential)
- Experience in working in a high-pressured working office environment (Desirable)

Assessments
Assessments for this role will take the form of a competency-based interview and a formal test on Knowledge of London. Assessments are provisionally scheduled to take place in mid-January 2026.
