Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
As a Senior Engineering Team Leader for Bridges and Structures, you will represent TfL Engineering as Technical Approval Authority and Subject Matter Expert for Bridges and Structures in TfL and when engaging with suppliers, customers, industry bodies and external agencies. You will report to a Principal Engineering Leader for Railway Structures. Your key accountabilities and responsibilities, based on the specific needs and direction of the role at the time will include:
- Working with Technical Approval Authority team, ensuring the timely delivery of Assurance activities, ensuring bridges and structures constructed or altered in the railway environment are safe, reliable and fit for purpose.
- Lead a team of Bridges and Structures Engineers supporting Assurance activities in the railway environment.
- Identifying and developing critical expertise required to keep the railways safe by using a risk-based approach.
- Ensuring the safety, integrity, reliability and efficiency of Bridges and Structures assets at all stages in the asset life cycle through engagement in planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and assessment activities.
- Monitoring and ensuring that the risk profile of Bridges and Structures assets in TfL’s railway environment are maintained in compliance with TfL policy.
- Providing engineering input in support of TfL operations, strategy, projects and asset management.
- Working closely with industry, internal and external stakeholders to introduce relevant innovations and best practice in TfL.
- Supporting the Head of Technical Discipline in authorship and updating of policies, standards and procedures for Bridges and Structures in the railway environment.
Role Requirements
You will be a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council or possess demonstrable recognised equivalent competencies.
The successful candidate is expected to bring both leadership skills and technical expertise in structural engineering, especially in association with railways. The line management side of the role involves leading team members to deliver their assignments efficiently and provide individual guidance for personal growth and career development. The candidate is expected to have the following essential knowledge, skills and experience:
- Strong technical background and sound understanding of structural principles.
- Undertaking the role of Technical Approval Authority for multidisciplinary projects as well as structural modifications.
- Significant experience in Bridges & Structures designs and/or assessment in the railway environment.
- Working in teams comprising of subject matter experts working on projects within a regulated environment, preferably within the Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations (ROGS) framework.
- Providing technical leadership in a Technical Approval Authority and/or delivery role on structural projects with an emphasis on whole life cycle benefits.
- Legislation, technical standards health, safety, environmental and sustainability considerations, and industry best practice related to the design, construction, structural assessment, maintenance, and operation of Bridges and Structures in the railway environment.
- Understanding of design management and project management principles that are applied to ensure consistent, efficient, and timely delivery of engineering service.
- Identifying, managing, and mitigating engineering related risks to a project and assets with a focus on the safety, reliability, quality, function and performance of operational assets and systems.
- Building relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to enable successful delivery of engineering solutions.
- Ability to support and supervise graduates and apprentices in their development.
