Job Role
To lead and direct a maintenance or inspection team, carrying out routine, complex and remedial maintenance tasks on the LUL track and associated assets within the Company’s safety, quality and efficiency targets.
Carrying out all track maintenance activities at Track Charge hand Level, complying with the Company's Regulations, rules and procedures.
May be required to work days or nights in accordance with local framework agreement and in all types of weather conditions
Key Accountabilities
- Assessing local track conditions and briefing his / her gang prior to starting work on task allocation, safety requirements, output required and standards to be achieved.
- Identifying any work necessary on track and associated assets to maintain and improve operational track performance including drainage, fencing and off-track activities.
- Ensuring that work carried out meets required standards for competency, quality and safety and signing off elements of work as being safe for normal or modified operations.
- Monitoring the performance of the gang and identifying any training or other needs necessary for a member of staff to achieve the required performance standards.
- Instructing other members of the gang on correct techniques and methods on any aspect of track maintenance work
- Monitoring staff to ensure that PPE is used, and that staff comply with safety rules and regulations
- Advising staff on minor signal repair tasks such as block joint changing, bonding etc.
- Liaising with other business units, and contractors for the achievement of work tasks and programmes.
- Ensuring that staff attendance including signing in and out is recorded and managed in accordance with Company policy
- for all Track staff within the gang that the post holder is charge hand for. If appropriately licensed job holder may deputise for an operational supervisor/manager.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Skills
- Commercial & Financial Awareness
- Proven ability to use Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Proven ability to communicate with people at all levels, including both external and internal stakeholders
- Analytical approach to data management and problem solving
- High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong leadership skills to ensure effective team development and address challenges and barriers that impact on people management
Knowledge
- Hold a Protection Master (Engineering Hours or Traffic Hours as required by shift) certificate and safety critical licence
- Hold the Track Maintenance Safety Critical License T001, T002 safety critical licenses (Except for in MIS where Charge hands will not be required to hold the competency to perform patrolling duties).
- Full UK Driving License and must adhere to company driving policy.
- Knowledge of track welding and inspection methodology
- Extensive knowledge of track maintenance activities and tooling/equipment required to undertake set tasks as required.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety rules, regulations and legislation in the railway environment
- Knowledge of continuous improvement best practice
Experience
- Proven experience of working in the track environment to include plain line re-railing, welding processes, Points and crossings and conductor rail maintenance.
- Leadership and management experience of managing performance (LU / TfL and Agency teams) in an operational, people intensive environment
